The GOP has a HUGE generic-ballot edge in the South (52%-31%), but it doesn’t lead anywhere else. In the Northeast, Dems have a 55%-30% edge; in the Midwest, they lead 49%-38%; and in the West, it’s 44%-43%. Yet do keep this caveat in mind: Many of the congressional districts Republicans are targeting outside of the South resemble some of those Southern districts they’re hoping to win back in November -- where you have whiter and older voters. Think Stephanie Herseth's seat in South Dakota; Tim Walz' seat in Minnesota; Leonard Boswell's seat in Iowa; and Ike Skelton's in Missouri.

If you are a Facebook user, you probably recognize that poll question. The current results on that social networking tool don't match what some actual polls show, but--hey!--it's Facebook! You know, that giant time-sucker on which you play Mafia Wars and flirt with people you hope to someday see naked.

I thought I'd check out some of the anti-government option comments and included them here, typos--and biases--intact:

Eagle: why do i need to do that? i can just walk into one of out ER's. or i can schedule an appointment with my primary doctor two weeks from now.

Patrick: You don't have to have insurance to get health care, just go to the emergency room for free, compliments of overtaxed, hard working, tax paying american citizens.

Jessica: I vote HELL NO in government run healthcare! The next step we are going to need the government for is wiping our asses too because there are too many people sitting on their asses getting hemorrhoids while I pay for their healthcare! How about we spend more time focusing on preventive medicine and stopping the whole referral to different specialists while the whole time the consumer is paying for multiple unnecessary copays?I still believe the American people are smart individuals who do not need the GOVERNMENT holding their hand and telling them what to do in their healthcare decisions! According to our Founding Fathers, this is SUPPOSED to be a FREE COUNTRY!! "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime!"

Talk of our Founding Fathers and Chinese proverbs aside, perhaps Jessica is on to something: I mean, I'm sure we can all learn to perform emergency surgery on ourselves, right?

The same day Dick Cheney delivered  a major speech on the battle against terrorism, a new national poll suggests that favorable opinions of the former vice president are on the rise.

But the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey, released Wednesday morning, indicates that a majority of Americans still have an unfavorable opinion of Cheney.

Fifty-five percent of people questioned in the poll say they have an unfavorable opinion of the former vice president. Thirty-seven percent say they have a favorable opinion of Cheney, up eight points from January when he left office.

In the past two months the former vice president has become a frequent critic of the new Administration in numerous national media interviews.

“Is Cheney’s uptick due to his visibility as one of the most outspoken critics of the Obama administration?  Almost certainly not,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Former President George W. Bush's favorable rating rose six points in that same time period, and Bush has not given a single public speech since he left office.”

The poll suggests that 41 percent of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the former president, with 57 percent viewing him unfavorably.

What have I learned from this poll? Nothing. I already knew that at least 37% and possibly as many as 41% of Americans are knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing dipshits.

A new Public Policy Polling survey shows President Obama would crush Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin in a hypothetical 2012 presidential contest, 55% to 35%.

Yes, it's probably way too early to run these types of polls, but insofar as Palin is concerned, there are some interesting findings. "The key reason Palin would lose to Obama by so much is that even though she might be the top choice for a certain segment of voters within her party, there's also a number of Republicans who say they would vote for Obama if their party nominated Palin."

More: "Palin is viewed negatively by 50% of voters in the country with just 39% holding a positive opinion of her. 69% of Republicans have a favorable view of her, while only 11% of Democrats do."

In an unscientific poll conducted by JackRabbit Café, former TV character Xena the Warrior Princess also bests the Alaskan Disaster, albeit by a much smaller margin.
