Donald Trump At CPAC: Arrogant Nimrod Hints At White House Run

The first day of this year's all-important Conservative Political Action Conference, a summit for top Republican politicians and operatives heading into a presidential election cycle, wasn't dominated by Newt Gingrich or Tim Pawlenty or any other actual Republican politician. It was Donald Trump, the wealthy television clown, who stole the show with the blunt, meandering speech he'd invited himself to deliver at the last minute.
Why was Donald Trump even at this conference for dyed-in-the-wool conservative activists and humorless Ayn Rand cultists? Apparently he's still pretending to consider a run for the Republican presidential nomination, just like he was four months ago. And in his speech today he said he'd reach a decision by June, which gives him another four months to win cheap headlines by pretending to consider a run for president.
His speech, like all good Donald Trump speeches, was a stream-of-consciousness flushing of whatever arrogant quips were swirling through his thick head at the time. Here's a sampler:
"If I run and if I win," he said, "this country will be respected again. I can tell you that."

Jesus Christ, the Republican Party sure does trot out a stable of diseased horses, doesn't it?

Scooped: Conservative Bloggers Get It All Wrong.

When conservative Rob Port took a tour of the White House this week, he was scandalized by the books he found on shelves in the White House library. "Photo Evidence: Michelle Obama Keeps Socialist Books in the White House Library," he blogged. He took a photo of the books in question, which includes "The American Socialist Movement 1897-1912" by Ira Kipnis (1952) and "The Social Basis of American Communism" by Nathan Glazer (1961).

Well, it was a first lady who put those books there, the Washington Post reports, but it wasn't Michelle Obama. It was Jacqueline Kennedy, who was known for the care and attention she gave to outfitting the White House; she hired Yale's librarian to stock it for her.

The books Port photographed have been sitting in the library since 1963.

The library came into being during the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt. In 1961, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy asked Yale University librarian James T. Babb to oversee a committee that would select books for the library. In 1963, 1,780 were placed on the shelves.

Joe the Plumber, overheard at his DC book signing while in town for CPAC.*

A Washington Post report suggests that a certain GOP folk hero might want to think about sticking with the stinky stuff: 

Joe the Plumber (no longer a plumber; first name actually Samuel) popped into our town yesterday evening to sell his new book and to remind people that he's still a plain and simple guy. Mission accomplished, on at least one of his missions.

About 11 people wandered into the rows of seats set up hopefully in the basement of a downtown Border's bookstore to hear Joe speak. Joe addressed them from behind a lectern and with a microphone, but that seemed unnecessarily formal.

After a long day at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele gave a speech asserting that the party is "alive and well."

Although he emphasized that the conservative movement must become a revolution and transform America, he conceded that the party had made mistakes: "We know the past, we know we did wrong. My bad. But we go forward in appreciation of the values that brought us to this point."

According to CNN, Steele was then praised by Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

As Steele concluded his remarks, Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann -- the event's moderator -- told Steele he was "da man."

"Michael Steele! You be da man! You be da man," she said.

I most recently blogged about the unbalanced Bachmann last week and about CPAC here earlier today. 

You know, whenever I argue with someone regarding the modern-day Republican Party and its fringe players and policies, I never use the qualifier "with all due respect."

Conservatives expect their largest turnout ever for the Conservative Political Action Conference this week, despite the Republicans' recent electoral batterings, the economic free fall that began under a Republican administration and only one Republican senator's having scored a perfect 100 in the American Conservative Union's just-released ratings.

Voters didn't reject conservatism - they just said “no, you can't” to the Republican Party after it had failed to walk the conservatism it had talked, ACU Chairman David A. Keene said this week.

This year, the star attraction, Rush Limbaugh, has as his only full-time quest the pursuit of Arbitron ratings. Yet the conservative movement's troops are converging on the Potomac anyway.

Why liberals don't hold a similar gathering or even refer to themselves as a movement is open to speculation, both hostile and friendly.

“We don't need the safety of numbers to feel secure in our ideology,” Richard Greene, the liberal host of “Hollywood Clout” on Air America Radio, told The Washington Times. “Conservatism is such an outdated and dysfunctional political philosophy these days, it requires reinforcement by masses of people, either in person or via wackjob talk radio.”
