Scooped: Conservative Bloggers Get It All Wrong.

When conservative Rob Port took a tour of the White House this week, he was scandalized by the books he found on shelves in the White House library. "Photo Evidence: Michelle Obama Keeps Socialist Books in the White House Library," he blogged. He took a photo of the books in question, which includes "The American Socialist Movement 1897-1912" by Ira Kipnis (1952) and "The Social Basis of American Communism" by Nathan Glazer (1961).

Well, it was a first lady who put those books there, the Washington Post reports, but it wasn't Michelle Obama. It was Jacqueline Kennedy, who was known for the care and attention she gave to outfitting the White House; she hired Yale's librarian to stock it for her.

The books Port photographed have been sitting in the library since 1963.

The library came into being during the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt. In 1961, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy asked Yale University librarian James T. Babb to oversee a committee that would select books for the library. In 1963, 1,780 were placed on the shelves.

In November, the morning after Election Day, a conservative blogger in Georgia blasted an e-mail to 65,000 people.

Erick Erickson's 5 a.m. "Morning Briefing" seemed counterintuitive -- the election of a Democrat to a U.S. House seat in Upstate New York held by

Republicans for more than a century, he wrote, was "a huge win for conservatives."

Yet the missive immediately was posted online by the conservative publication Human Events, a corporate sibling of Erickson's blog, RedState. It next reached the Web site of the American Spectator magazine, whose publisher, Alfred S. Regnery, sits on the board of the conservative publishing house that owns RedState and Human Events.

Ricocheting inside the Beltway, Erickson's analysis fueled discussion later that morning at two influential weekly meetings of D.C. conservatives. Next, it was endorsed by radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh, considered by many conservatives the ultimate authority. "We kept a horrible Republican from possibly winning," Limbaugh said.

The ability of a single e-mail to shape a message illustrates the power of the conservative network -- loosely affiliated blogs, radio hosts, "tea-party" organizers and D.C. institutions that are binding together to fuel opposition to President Obama and, sometimes, to Republicans.

With the Democratic defeat in the recent special senatorial election in Massachusetts, engineered in part by tea-party activists working with several Beltway-based groups, the conservative movement is more energized than it has been in years.

It is also more unified. Disputes festered between economic and social conservatives during the Bush years, but they have eased amid what all sides decry as Obama's liberal agenda. "Nothing unites like a common enemy," said Colin Hanna, president of the conservative group Let Freedom Ring.

There's an echo in there.

Who's Lying Now?

Lots of lying from the fringe about the size of yesterday's Rally of the Misinformed in Washington.

From Salon.com:

"You have redefined gridlock in Washington, D.C.," Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told the crowd gathered in front of the Capitol on Saturday for a rally that was part Tea Party and part Glenn Beck's 9/12 Project. The reference was to the highways around the nation's capital, which Blackburn said she'd heard had been closed due to the 1.5 million people who'd come out for the demonstration.

Crowd size estimates like the one Blackburn gave were flying around all day on Saturday. Some said they heard 1.2 million, others 1.6 million; conservative blogger Michelle Malkin said in one post that ABC News had estimated the attendance at 2 million.

Malkin was wrong -- ABC had never reported anything like that. In her own way, Blackburn was wrong, too. So were all the others. They weren't even in the ballpark, which most news outlets estimated in the tens of thousands and D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services said, unofficially, was somewhere between 60,000 and 75,000 people.

Glenn Beck Hates The Color Of Change.

The echo on the right is reverberating again...

First, the predictable indignant outrage, courtesy of the Los Angeles Times:

Glenn Beck used his popular Fox News show this afternoon to attack the background of Van Jones, a White House environmental advisor who co-founded an African American political advocacy group that organized an advertising boycott of his program.

During his 2 p.m. PDT show, Beck did not address the boycott spearheaded by Color of Change to protest the talk show host’s remark last month that he believes President Obama is “a racist.”

Instead, he spent a large share of his program suggesting that Jones, who co-founded Color of Change in 2005, is a radical. Jones now serves as a special advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

During a six-minute biographical profile, set to ominous music, Beck said Jones was twice arrested for political protests and has described himself as a "rowdy black nationalist." The talk show host cast the piece as part of a broader examination of Obama's "czars," special advisers to the president who "don't answer to anybody."

"Why is it that such a committed revolutionary has made it so high into the Obama administration as one of his chief advisers?" Beck asked.

A White House spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment. Color of Change declined to comment. Jones has not been active in the group since December 2007.

Here comes the "echo" part, from The American Spectator:

Color of Change is the extremist racial grievance group that isn't happy that TV's Glenn Beck did several news packages on Van Jones, the self-described "communist" and "rowdy black nationalist" who became the president's green jobs czar after jumping on the environmentalist bandwagon. The White House may be behind a push to destroy Beck by convincing advertisers to stop buying time on his show. Jones was also on the board of the Apollo Alliance, a hard-left environmentalist group that is now running large chunks of the Obama administration. The group has acknowledged that it dictated parts of the February stimulus bill to Congress.

With the help of the Obama administration, the coalition is launching a public relations campaign under the radar of the mainstream media -- which remains almost uniformly terrified of criticizing the nation's first black president -- to try to change 9/11 from a day of reflection and remembrance to a day of activism, food banks, and community gardens.

Right-wing mimic Michelle Malkin chimed in, with a blog post proclaiming, "Look who's hijacking 9/11," featuring a Photoshopped Shepard Fairey-style Obama poster declaring, "Obey." Malkin then linked to the "American Prospect" post, in yet another display of fringe-right synchronicity. Her witless non-originality continues unabated.

Meanwhile, according to the AP:

Glenn Beck returns to Fox News Channel after a vacation on Monday with fewer companies willing to advertise on his show than when he left, part of the fallout from calling President Barack Obama a racist.

A total of 33 Fox advertisers, including Walmart, CVS Caremark, Clorox and Sprint, directed that their commercials not air on Beck's show, according to the companies and ColorofChange.org, a group that promotes political action among blacks and launched a campaign to get advertisers to abandon him. That's more than a dozen more than were identified a week ago.

Unfortunately, carnival barkers like Beck are ratings gold on cable, and he averaged 2.4 million viewers each day during the week before his vacation, according to Nielsen Media Research.

BTW, Glenn--the cleaner called. Your hood is ready for pick up...

To hear the tea party crowd tell it, we are headed for a government take-over and totalitarian tyranny, and the good-for-nothin' government is to blame. For one tea party-promoting, D-list celebrity's wife, however, it seems the government is good enough to defraud.

The wife of Monkees vocalist Micky Dolenz has been arrested on charges that she defrauded a housing program in New York City.

Authorities in the city's Department of Investigation say Donna Quinter illegally received nearly $137,000 in government rental subsidies for her Manhattan apartment.

The subsidies were supposed to go to middle-income families.

Investigators say Quinter didn't disclose that she was sharing the apartment with a friend. They say she also did not disclose that she had married Dolenz and was living primarily in a gated community outside Los Angeles.

Micky Dolenz was a performer at "America's Tea Party," the right-wing, FOX News-promoted anti-everything gathering in Dallas on July 4th. I don't know if his wife shares his teabagging ways. But maybe the event's speakers--which included tea bag queen Michelle Malkin--advocated defrauding the government as pay-back for all that damn socialism.

Why Does A Legitimate News Organization Book Crazy People?

ABC News used to be a legitimate news organization. Now they book right-wing crackpots like Michelle Malkin, who is to thoughtful analysis as a hammer is to a healer's hands.

If ABC News is nothing more than a promotional outlet for authors of hysterical fringe fiction such as Malkin--she has a new book out, which must be why she's emerged from her tea party outhouse recently--they need to drop the "News" from their name. They are now as credible a news source as "Live! With Regis and Kelly."

Malkin's default position seems to be that unemployed Americans are shiftless, lazy slobs whose sole purpose in life is to suck off the government teat of unemployment benefits. With that low opinion of her fellow citizens, it seems fair to conclude that Malkin hates Americans, right?

Malkin: If you put enough government cheese in front of people they are just going to keep eating it and you're just kicking the can down the road and just to hammer this point about the unemployment benefits extension again it was Larry Katz, who's a chief labor economist under the Clinton labor department who came out with a study and there are a lot of these economists who say this that if you keep extending these "temporary" unemployment benefits you're just going to extend joblessness even more...(t)hat was a Clinton economist who said it George...(s)eventy nine weeks already and then they're going to extend it by another thirteen weeks and what happens is according to these economists who have seen it including this Clinton economist is that people will just delay getting a job until the three weeks before the benefits run out.

Of course, as Crooks and Liars points out, Malkin has the Katz theory ass-backwards:

Traditionally, many economists have been leery of prolonged unemployment benefits because they can reduce the incentive to seek work. But that should not be a concern now because jobs remain so scarce. For every job that becomes available, about six people are looking, Dr. Katz said. “Unemployment insurance gives income to families who are really suffering and can’t find work even if they are hustling to look,” he said. With the economy still listing, he added, a temporary extension can provide a quick fiscal stimulus. And, Dr. Katz said, when people exhaust unemployment and health insurance, many end up applying for disability benefits, which become a large, unending drain on the Treasury.

The nation's unemployment rate is 9.7%, yet dumbass conservative gasbags like Malkin seem to be thriving in this cratered economy. Alas, in times like these, any recession shopper will tell you that you might have to sacrifice quality and settle for the cheap shit.

The previous two posts highlighted conservative gadfly Matt Drudge and his attempts to drum up outrage over President Obama's town hall meeting on health care reform on ABC, to be aired on June 24.

Knock (Up), Knock (Up); Who's There?

Easily-aggrieved Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and coattail-riding right-wing nitwit Michelle Malkin continue to manufacture righteous indignity over David Letterman's jokes the other night.

Sarah Palin says David Letterman owes an apology to young women across the country for his joke about her daughter.

The Alaska governor appeared on NBC's "Today" show Friday, continuing a feud with Letterman over his joke that Palin's daughter got "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez during their recent trip to New York.

Palin says the late-night funnyman has contributed to a thread throughout culture that says it's acceptable and funny to talk about statutory rape.

Letterman has said his joke was about Palin's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, who is a single mother. But it was her 14-year-old daughter, Willow, who'd been at the baseball game.

Palin said it took Letterman time to think of the "convenient excuse" that he was talking about Bristol instead of Willow.

And then there's Michelle Malkin. If it's ersatz outrage and a hyperventilating cultural patrol that you want, she's your gal:

An Oklahoma City man who announced on Twitter that he would turn an April 15 tax protest into a bloodbath was hit with a federal charge of making interstate threats last week, in what appears to be first criminal prosecution to stem from posts on the microblogging site.

Daniel Knight Hayden, 52, was arrested by FBI agents who identified him as the Twitter user CitizenQuasar. In a series of tweets beginning April 11, CitizenQuasar vowed to start a "war" against the government on the steps of the Oklahoma City Capitol building, the site of that city's version of the national "Tea Party" protests promoted by the conservative-leaning Fox News.

"START THE KILLING NOW! I am willing to be the FIRST DEATH!," read a tweet at 8:01 PM that day. "After I am killed on the Capitol Steps, like a REAL man, the rest of you will REMEMBER ME!!!," he added five minutes later. Then: "Send the cops around. I will cut their heads off the heads and throw the[m] on the State Capitol steps."

Hayden's MySpace page is a breathtaking gallery of right wing memes about the "New World Order," gun control as Nazi fascism, and Barack Obama's covert use of television hypnosis, among many others.

Hmm. Didn't the right-wing echo chamber take offense to the recent Department of Homeland Security report warning of this type of threat, even though the report never uses the word "conservative"? 

Michelle Malkin: By contrast, the piece of crap report issued on April 7 is a sweeping indictment of conservatives. And the intent is clear. As the two spokespeople I talked with on the phone today made clear: They both pinpointed the recent “economic downturn” and the “general state of the economy” for stoking “rightwing extremism.” One of the spokespeople said he was told that the report has been in the works for a year. My b.s. detector went off the chart, and yours will, too, if you read through the entire report — which asserts with no evidence that an unquantified “resurgence in rightwing extremist recruitment and radicalizations activity” is due to home foreclosures, job losses, and…the historical presidential election.

Glenn Beck: Well, now we have the report from DHS on rightwing extremists. You will see in this report why I didn't run to get this on the air because this report is extremist. This report will show you the things to come. It is phenomenal that this is a government document. 

Sean Hannity: “I'm not Ron Paul's biggest fan but if you have a Ron Paul bumper sticker, you might be viewed as a radical by the government...(w)hat do you think of that interpretation, especially coming from a guy that started his political career in the home of an unrepentant terrorist who bombed our Pentagon and Capitol and sat in Rev. Wright's church for 20 years?”

Rush Limbaugh: I had a report, I got this at 2:30 yesterday afternoon.  I just didn't have a chance to work it in yesterday.  It's this Department of Homeland Security report, it's nine pages, I've got the PDF here, and, by the way, this speech of Obama's and the DHS report yesterday are timed for one reason and that's the tea parties tomorrow.  This speech, the primary purpose of this speech is to take any glow off the tea parties.  The media is going to report on this speech later this afternoon and tell you about how great the economy is doing, how on top of it Obama is, how it's going to be a little while before it rebounds but it's coming back, and in having used that as the setup, they'll then go to videotape of the tea parties where they'll try to mock what's going on with these people, just agitators with no real reason behind what they're doing.  So this speech is designed to totally blunt the tea parties, which are grassroots affairs that will happen all over America tomorrow.  The DHS report, this comes from the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano.  Now, when you read this whole thing, and it doesn't take long to read it, it's only nine pages, you can go to various places and read summaries of it as well.  For example, there is no proof here, no proof offered, no evidence offered that anything they project is true.

     Silly, dipshit teabagger Michelle Malkin--a frequent target here simply because she's full-tilt crazy--posted an enraged piece last night on a Department of Homeland Security report warning of domestic right-wing terrorism. I thought that I could hear her shrieks and maniacal keyboard pounding even though we live in different states, but it tuned out that was just a feral cat and a raccoon brawling in the crawl-space under my building. 

     David Neiwert at Crooks and Liars read her banshee rantings, too:   

      My my my. The right, led by Michelle Malkin, is up in arms over the Department of Homeland Security's internal intelligence report on right-wing extremism and its post-Obama resurgence.

      Malkin's headline wails:

"The Obama DHS Hit Job on Conservatives Is Real"

      So, I have a question for Malkin: Are you saying that mainstream conservatives are now right-wing extremists?

      Because, you know, the report -- which in fact is perfectly accurate in every jot and tittle -- couldn't be more clear. It carefully delineates that the subject of its report is "rightwing extremists," "domestic rightwing terrorist and extremist groups," "terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks," "white supremacists," and similar very real threats described in similar language.

      Nothing about conservatives. The word never appears in the report.

      Because, you know, we always thought there was a difference between right-wing extremists and mainstream conservatives too. My new book, The Eliminationists: How Hate Talk Radicalized the American Right, does explain that the distance between them has in fact shrunk considerably, thanks to the help of people like Malkin.

      And now she's evidently intent on shrinking it further:

And, while it's obvious Malkin hasn't been paying attention, there in fact is considerable data coming over the transom to indicate that there's real problem looming with the far right.

      Don't forget: Before he'd even been sworn into office, we had skinheads (photo above) being arrested for plotting Obama's assassination.  

      Malkin has also been the paranoid head cheerleader for this week's idiotic tea party protests and will be her eye-rolling, hyperventilating self--LIVE!--from Sacramento with FOX News tool Neil Cavuto on Wednesday. 

      Jeez, sorry I'll be missing that, but I'm sure I'll have something better to do.
