And Republicans say Democrats are the ones who condescend to working-class people: A National Republican Senatorial Committee ad showing actors in flannel shirts and trucker caps in a diner complaining about West Virginia Democratic candidate Joe Manchin was actually shot in Philadelphia with actors. “We are going for a ‘Hicky’ Blue Collar look,” read the NRSC’s casting call for the ad. “These characters are from West Virginia so think coal miner/trucker looks.” The call’s clothing suggestions include, work boots, flannel or denim shirts, “Dickie’s type jacket with T-shirt underneath,” down-filled vest, “John Deer [sic] hats (not brand new, preferably beat up),” “trucker hats (not brand new, preferably beat up).”

Former Gov. Mitt Romney seemed to be in a state of hysteria Monday - a day before President Obama signed legislation that will usher in sweeping reforms of the nation’s health care system. In a statement on the House passage of the health care bill, Romney excoriated Obama, saying “America has just witnessed an unconscionable abuse of power. President Obama has betrayed his oath to the nation.”
But behind those caustic words is of course a man who, himself signed a universal health care bill into law for this great state. In the coming months and years, Romney is bound to assert that the two plans are completely different - but that is a losing strategy. The American attention span is getting smaller not larger. We communicate in 140 characters now. Engaging in a debate over the intricacies of the different types of universal health care plans is not something people want to do. So the reality is this: Romney supported universal health care in Massachusetts and he looks duplicitous bashing Obama’s plan when his plan was quite similar.

While serving as a U.S. congressman, (South Carolina governor) Mark Sanford was incredibly critical of his colleagues’ marital misdeeds, including the affairs of former congressman Bob Livingston and President Bill Clinton:

“The bottom line, though, is I am sure there will be a lot of legalistic explanations pointing out that the president lied under oath. His situation was not under oath. The bottom line, though, is he still lied. He lied under a different oath, and that is the oath to his wife. So it’s got to be taken very, very seriously.” [Sanford on Livingston, CNN, 12/18/98]

Sanford has also been an opponent of same-sex marriage, saying in 2004, “As Jenny and I are the parents of four little boys, we’ve always taught our kids that marriage was something between a man and a woman.” [The Post and Courier, 2/11/04]

Gov. Sanford, I am not an expert on matrimony, but I was unaware that the man in your ideal marriage can leave his wife and fly to Buenos Aires to hook-up with his mistress. Is that a brand-new definition, or just a Southern thang...

Alaska Gov. SarahPalin will sign bills accepting most of the federal stimulus funds available to the state, her spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Palin initially said she would accept only about two-thirds of the $930 million available to Alaska.

Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said the governor changed her mind after the public weighed in during legislative hearings prior to lawmakers passing bills to seek almost all of the funding.

Palin had warned about the state having to finance projects created by the stimulus funds after the federal money runs out. She earlier called the stimulus package "an unsustainable, debt-ridden package of funds."

Alaska's Legislature conducted more than 20 public hearings on the federal stimulus package, and legislative leaders said they couldn't find any of the strings attached to the funds that Palin had warned about.

They passed bills accepting nearly all the funds before the April 19 adjournment.

"I thank legislators for their work on the federal economic stimulus package and the public for participating in the process," Palin said Tuesday in a statement.

Unfortunately for the ethics-challenged moose shooter, none of the stimulus funds will be available to be used for her mounting personal legal woes, stacks of Bibles or for lipstick.
