R.I.P.: Killer Kowalski

From Canada's Ottawa Citizen:

Killer Kowalski, one of Canada's most revered and feared professional wrestlers, died Saturday of complications from a heart attack.

He was 81.

Between 1947-77, the Windsor native, born Walter Spulnik, fought in a number of wrestling associations, including the National Wrestling Association and culminating in the World Wrestling Federation, where he won the tag-team championship.

Originator of "The Claw", and the man who ripped Yukon Eric's ear off--accidently--in a match in Montreal in 1952.

I saw Killer fight Mad dog Vachon at the Verdun auditorium when I was 8 or 9. It was the claw that finally put the Mad Dog down. Every now and then I'll clutch my wrist with the other hand and give someone the sign of "The Claw". Either they know or they think I'm crazy. They'd think I was crazy if I turned that bad boy loose. RIP Killer and a big thanks to the other stars of Grand Prix Wrestling for entertaining me and my other pre-adolescent friends. That would include your blog master, Johnny Russia, who would have made a pretty good wrestler himself, especially when it came to hitting people with a folding chair!
