"I'm Not Sure Where We're Goin', Either..."

From the AP:

President Bush's popularity has tanked, but boy can he still bring in the cash.

He's raked in close to a billion dollars, the political fundraiser in chief, during his White House tenure.

In all, Bush has personally raised more than $968 million for the Republican Party, GOP candidates and his own re-election campaign and inauguration during his two terms in office. And he's not finished.

He's now lost a big part of the national spotlight to presidential contenders John McCain and Barack Obama, but he remains a formidable force on the fundraising circuit, mostly at private affairs closed to the media. His total so far this year is roughly $70 million.

Whenever I hear that the "American people" are "smart", "not easily fooled", or that we "can see through" lies, I cough, then I laugh, and I again read stories such as these.

Ka-CHING!

I think we are bought, sold, lied to, and that we are supreme suckers for the ruse.

I'm just a cynical optimist tucked 'way in a hesitant pessimist's bad-ass, thrift-store duster.

I walk two hours every day--stopping to talk with everyone--invariably shuffling home alone, though, and wondering why a poor man votes against himself.

We aren't "smart", we are certainly "easily fooled", and most of us couldn't "see through" a lie, even if we had a fucking X-Ray detector.

This is our country.

Jesus H. Christ.

(Allah, Buddah, and Tom Cruise, too...)
