I never said this was better song than Zevon's. Note the word "new" in the post's title...
And being a Yankee fan has nothing to do with liking a song about Dock Ellis, who may have been a "punk", but who could pitch like a son-of-a-bitch in his prime. An intimidator.
Just read the words of the guys who faced him.
And I don't think the LSD story is an "urban legend", as several of his teammates have confirmed it through the years. HBO also found old footage from both the game and--more telling--a post-game interview featuring a more-bizarre than usual Dock Ellis.
So, no, TBLMISBT, I don't claim this is the best song about baseball or a baseball player ever.
For me, that award goes to Steve Goodman and "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request".
And--HEY--that one's not about the Yankees, either!

Um, I thought you were a Yankee fan? I don't buy the Doc Ellis LSD urban legend either. Doc was a punk and bullshit artist.
BTW, Warren Zevon's Bill Lee is the best baseball player song. Even Dylan's Catfish is a better song.
The return of the best looking man in show business today.

Jesus, no wonder nobody posts comments here...
I found it odd that a Yankee fan could show any love to the guy who tried to end Reggie Jackson's career...
Ha! I love it!
I am also the little-known Redondo rapper, "Pugnacious Poster".
Dig the song, although that doesn't mean I'm showin' love to the song's subject.
I mean, I love gospel music, but I don't believe in the Gospel.
I know Dock Ellis ended up cleaning up his act, and I read that now he's sick as hell, needing a liver transplant...
