"Vanity is the quicksand of reason".

This is a mock-up of a proposed vanity plate for Florida's "true believers":

This post's title is a quote from French romantic writer George Sand. He died in 1876, so he was out of his misery before the public display of stupidity known as the "vanity plate".
A nation of vehicular narcissists, driving around with "personal" messages, subjecting the poor sap behind them to the inanities of witless minds.
So leave it to the fetid swamplands of Florida to predictably lower the bar in its continuing limbo with sanity.
According to the AP, the Florida legislature is considering a vanity plate featuring a Christian cross, a stained-glass window, and the words "I Believe".
     I don't believe it.
The wheels on Florida's "Common Sense Express" fell off a long time ago. That Banana Republic still can't count votes, but their politicians have time to toy with this?
A court challenge is a virtual certainty if this bad idea is approved.
The plate's sponsor is Rep. Edward Bullard, who compares a state-produced religious license plate to "football team" tags.
Florida already has a "Choose Life" plate, and now about a dozen other states do, too.
     Bullard--not surprisingly--would oppose a plate for atheists that said "I Don't Believe".
I oppose 'em all, even the one that would be letter-perfect for Rep. Bullard:
     "CRZYDPSHT".

Vanity plates are excellent revenue sources for state governments. If their issuance helps off set tax increases then I don't care what you put on the plate. If someone is foolish enough to be sucked into purchasing and maintaining a vanity plate, thank you and good for us. Perhaps a little over sensitive on this one Johnny. People have been making money off religion since there was religion. I wouldn't want one, but I think it is a great idea. Now if they come out with an Elvis plate, get out the way, here comes bluswdshs!

The continuing NASCAR-ification of America: "THIS SPACE FOR SALE".

And a government-produced religious product.

Yeah. I'm SENSITIVE about that.

What better space to sell than religion. Just think of the line ups at the DMV to get their I believe plates. Look how much it wound you up, just think of what it does to the faithful. That will sell.
